RELIABLE BEARINGS FOR AERO ENGINES

Special Bearings Division, part of the EPK bearing corporation was organized in 2005 on the basis of OAO ZAP - Aviation Bearing Plant located in Samara. Among the key consumers of the Division produced bearings are such industries as aerospace, military, shipbuilding, nuclear power engineering, high-precision machine-building. These are the industries where the quality of bearings determines the operability of the most important assemblies of the product.

The Division supplies all types of bearings including hinge bearings. Its bearings are utilized in a wide range of military and civil products, being important parts of aircraft, helicopters, rockets, tanks, submarines, vessels, gas-turbine power plants, etc.

ZAP, the core plant of the Special Bearings Division, primarily specializes in manufacturing bearings for aircraft and helicopter engines. All Soviet- and Russian-made aero engines utilize its products.

Aviation Bearing Plant has mastered batch production of the following bearing groups:
- radial ball bearings;
- angular - contact ball bearings;
- thrust and thrust radial ball bearings;
- radial roller bearings with short cylindrical rollers;
- radial roller bearings with needle rollers and long cylindrical rollers;
- thrust roller bearings;
- tapered roller bearings;
- spherical roller bearings.

The company's product mix currently includes more than 5000 types of bearings including double-raw and flange designs, high-precision (ABEC-5, ABEC-7, ABEC-9) and low-noise bearings ranging from 19 mm to 620 mm in diameter and from 20 g to 76.8 kg in weight. Races and rolling elements are manufactured from bearing steels, hot-working steels, and stainless steels. Cages are made of steel and nonferrous metals: bronze, brass, aluminum alloys and also textolite. In 2007 the plant mastered production of hybrid bearings with ceramic rolling elements.

Strict quality control is maintained at all stages of manufacturing process based on a well-developed network of experimental and research laboratories. All the bearings of aerospace and military application undergo extra complex testing to be approved by the Quality Control Agency of the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation. The plant's quality management system meets all the up-to-date demands and is certified according to DIN EN ISO 9001:2000 standard. In November 2009 OAO ZAP successfully passed the certification audit to meet AS9100 standard requirements for designing and manufacturing bearings for aerospace industry. The body of certification is BUREAU VERITAS.

Aviation Bearing Plant's Volzhsky Affiliate (located in the town of Volzhsky near Volgograd) specializes in production of tapered roller bearings as well as spindle bearings.

Special Bearings Division markets and distributes all special bearings produced at other EPK manufacturing companies (Moscow Plant, Volzhsky Bearing Plant and Saratov Bearing Plant) including large-size bearings, spiral roller bearings and hinge bearings.

The Division incorporates Special Designing Bureau. Its main research fields include designing of high-tech special bearings for modern aircraft engines. In 2009 the Special Designing Bureau designed 43 new types of bearings with many of them implementing ingenious designing solutions. All the projects were carried out conjointly with aerospace manufacturers in association with Central Institute of Aviation Motors and Samara State Aerospace University
