Aircraft engine business, based on high technologies
and scientific achievements, acts as a power-ful accelerator of development
of other branches of industry. Certain developed western countries put
this business in the list of so-called "critical technologies" which determine
national security. In turn, to create an aircraft engine it is necessary
to have a high level of fundamental and applied sci-ence, as well as high
technologies in many other branches of industry. As of today, there are
only two countries in the world - Russia and the USA - capable of creating
state-of-the-art engines for any known application in civil and military
aviation. There are many reasons to say that the aircraft engine business
seriously affects political and economical security of a nation. One of
the most im-portant issues for the Russian engine-makers has been their
integration into the world's industry. There are several forms of international
co-operation that have been tried: joint ventures, operations with shares
of engine-building enterprises and work on contracts. So far, the process
of integration has been going relatively fast between engine enterprises
of Russia and the Ukraine. There are sev-eral important projects that the
two countries carry out together, such as creation of the D-436, TV3-117SBM
and D-27 engines.
