In the early 1950s a modified M-1 jet-turbine
engine of 4000 hp, designed by Sergei Kolosov (head of the OKB-16 based
in Kazan) was installed on a torpedo boat as a device for additional acceleration.
Two-year operational trials of the vessel proved that turbine engines can
be effective in this application. As a result, in May 1954 the Council
of Ministers of the USSR issued a order establishing Special Design Bureau
of gas turbine units for the Navy. Since then the enterprise based in Nikolaev
has evolved into Mashproekt Scientific-Industrial Enterprise named after
Kolosov. Today, its spectre of activities encompasses research-and-development
of gas turbine units for industrial applications and the Navy, assembly
of prototypes of these units, tests, production and deliveries to customers.
